The RFID boom is on! Be it libraries or government offices, retail stores or manufacturing
companies, RFID is the buzz word today. It serves a wide range of applications, and has proved to be a boon for many organizations. The number of organizations recognizing the benefits of this wonderful technology called RFID is on the rise. Consequently, more and more organizations are adopting this technology. This article studies the concept of RFID in the textile industry in detail – from the meaning of the concept to its various applications and the benefits that it provides.
What is RFID?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, a technology that involves wireless data capture and transaction processing. It uses radio waves to transmit information about an object or a person to the concerned person.
How it works
As stated above, RFID works using radio waves. A small microchip with an antenna is attached to the product, which contains data about the product. The chip and the antenna together are known as 'RFID tag'.
Thus, an RFID system essentially consists of two components – an RFID tag and an RFID reader. When a reader reads the chip, the antenna allows the data that is recorded in the chip to be converted into digital information. This can then be easily accessed by the concerned person. When a chip is read by an RFID reader, along with the data contained in the chip, three things become clear:
- The chip ID
- The reader ID, and
- The time the tag was read.

In today’s modern world very lees things are there which can be acquired or achieved by just sitting at only one single location. So, like many people on the planet, you've probably got a hectic schedule and are always on the go carrying on with many modern conveniences such as cell phones and PDA's with Internet and emailing capabilities, you can find information and communicate from almost anywhere. All these gadgets are great to have them with you, however, one disadvantage is that they are so small and can sometimes be difficult to see and can be a pain to type on. But this new gadget, the Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard, may be a great solution to that problem.
The Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard is a tiny device that uses lasers to project a keyboard on to any flat surface. You can then use the 63 key, full-size keyboard to type an email on any Bluetooth enabled PDA or cell phone. With simulated key click sounds and the capability of handling typing speeds of a standard keyboard, the virtual keyboard will make it easier to type on your small electronics. A little larger than a matchbook, this gadget fits nicely in your pocket or purse. The rechargeable battery will last up to 120 minutes.

Mobile phones have invaded our lives and have made their own unique stand. They have enabled us to even watch television apart from the basic functions of making calls and sending texts. Latest innovation with handsets is that it can be used for shopping also. Shopping through mobile phones to buys things like train tickets and other items are very common in Japan, but the trend is yet new in many other countries. The skyrocketing trend in Japan at present is the integration of websites with magazines, and television programmes. "Polo Ralph Lauren" the renowned retailer has launched a new mobile e-commerce site which enables consumers to shop around, and buy products through their mobile phones. Through this cutting edge shopping method, consumers can shop from anywhere and at anytime. This is a far more advanced level than the present computer based e-commerce.
Polo Ralph Lauren is the first luxury retailer to launch a mobile shopping site. This is a new way to choose clothing in a user-friendly and high tech manner. 2D bar codes will be used under this method, which will direct the customers to Ralph Lauren's mobile website. Special codes in print ads, store windows, and mailings will be placed by the company. Consumers will have to download special software to their camera phones that will scan the codes and direct it to a phone friendly version of with website of Ralph Lauren. The 2D codes hold a large volume of information like URL's, which can be detected by the user's phone software and will automatically connect the user to the portal. Just by holding the phone over the given symbol or photographing it, the user can get connected with a specific internet portal.

Focused, carefully managed RFID initiatives designed to accomplish specific business goals are already producing significant, measurable benefits for the apparel and footwear industry, Item-level tags and in-store deployments are addressing some of the industry's most basic challenges, including out-of-stock levels, inventory accuracy, and helping customers quickly and easily find the size, style and color that they're looking for.
RFID's speed, accuracy and operational applications are being demonstrated in a growing number of realworld retail deployments. For example, item-level tagging is making daily cycle counts traditionally so time consuming and labor-intensive they take place only two to four times a year-not just possible but practical.
These and other RFID benefits are creating sales lifts ranging from 5 to 20 percent across a wide range of deployments.
Those stuck in a "Think Big" mindset- believing that RFID deployments must be large-scale, enterprise wide affairs in order to be effective - are mistaken, says Marshall Kay, Principal at consulting firm RFID Sherpas LLC. "Unfortunately, the retailers who make this error compound their problems by then failing to attach sufficient priority to educating themselves and staying abreast of successful retail deployments, " says Kay, "What they fail to appreciate is that RFID can be deployed in a very targeted manner, and almost immediately begin delivering meaningful, tangible benefits."

Bull has a gadget for businesses worried about the security of data stored on laptops: a bootable, portable password-protected hard disk drive with an embedded cryptographic processor that protects data if the device is lost or stolen.
Globull (pronounced globule) is a bright red package about the size and weight of an iPod Classic. It has a color display, houses a 60GB hard disk drive and has a USB 2.0 cable that wraps around the device for storage.
Plug it into any PC that can boot from an external USB 2.0 drive, switch on the computer, enter your password on Globull's tiny touch-sensitive pad beneath its display, and you have access to your regular working environment, applications and data. Switch off the computer again and you can take your data away without leaving a trace, said Bull's marketing director Bruno Pinna.
Globull's design means that users don't need to trust the PCs they use: They enter passwords directly on Globull, and the encryption keys never leave the device. The working environment is loaded entirely from the device, so there is no risk of observation or interception by malicious software on the PC, Pinna said.
Most recent PCs have the ability to boot from an external USB drive, although IT managers may have chosen to disable this option in the BIOS settings for security reasons. It's not always desirable if staffers can boot up an operating system of their choice, bypassing antivirus or other security software installed on company PCs.
The 120-gram Globull package contains the hard disk and a cryptographic processor that scrambles data on the fly at 100Mbit/sec., using the Advanced Encryption Standard with a 256-bit key (AES-256), protecting the data if the disk is lost or stolen. Without the password, the data cannot be decrypted.
Bull envisages a number of scenarios in which the drive could be useful to secure data: Mobile workers with their own laptops and staff working on shared PCs, or for performing demonstrations on a client's computer. The company suggests installing a complete operating system -- Windows or Linux -- and applications on the device, but warns buyers to ensure that their existing software licenses allow such a use.
Booting Windows from an external drive can be tricky, because it needs to know about peripherals and other hardware at the time it is installed, Pinna said. To get around that limitation, Bull offers an optional virtualization layer for Globull based on Mandriva Linux. The virtualization layer allows a Windows installation to run regardless of the hardware used.
For now, Bull is offering the device only in France, but despite the defense-level encryption it contains, there's no legal reason why it can't be sold elsewhere, said company spokeswoman Anne Marie Jourdain. Bull preferred to concentrate on France first, and an international launch is planned for the second half of the year, she said.
Globull has a price tag of $685, but the price is negotiable in quantity, Jourdain said.
The virtualization layer adds about $125 to the cost, Pinna said.
By year's end, Bull hopes to offer a higher-capacity model with a 120GB disk. Other authentication methods are also being considered, including a version with a fingerprint reader.

Abstract
The design of knitted garments is an activity shared by knitwear designers (who are almost all young and female) and knitting machine technicians (who are almost all male and usually older). The process involves programming knitting machines using CAD systems, which are designed for and used by the technicians. The designers get much less training and access to the CAD systems than they want. This paper examines why this is, and what would be involved in creating a situation where the designers are empowered over the technology of knitwear design. It concludes that the limitations of the technology cause this situation, which is reinforced by economic and attitudinal factors.
1. Introduction
The profession of knitwear designer is absent from lists of typical female occupations (e.g. Lockwood and Knowles, 1984), but it is almost entirely female; their closest colleagues, knitting machine technicians, are almost entirely male. Both groups are finding computers increasingly unavoidable: programming industrial knitting machines is an essential part of knitwear production, and this is now done almost entirely with purpose-built computer aided design systems. The male group exists to use this complex technology; the female group does not get the access and competence with CAD systems many of its members clearly want. Moreover, one can make a strong prima facie case that empowering knitwear designers over the CAD technology should result in a substantial improvement in the efficiency of the design process, leading to the production of cheaper or better garments.
* Why do knitwear designers have very little access and control over the computer technology in their industry?
* What is involved in creating a situation where knitwear designers have full access and mastery over the computer technology?
* Would creating this situation be cost-effective for the knitwear industry?
This paper is an attempt to answer the first question and explore the second as far as is possible at the present time. The answer to the third depends on future developments in the industry, particularly on the capability and cost of CAD systems, though we describe the major factors determining the answer. Technological, economic and attitudinal factors all act to create a situation where knitwear designers have very little opportunity to use or develop competence with knitting machine CAD systems; we attempt to assess the relative importance of these influences. In discussing what the obstacles are to enabling knitwear designers to use CAD systems, and how they might be overcome, we have chosen not to discuss future developments in computer support for designing. Instead we concentrate on the barriers that exist to effective use of existing systems and to the development of CAD systems better suited to the needs of designers. We also comment in passing on the sharp sex divisions between the different occupations in the knitwear industry, though we have not studied the causes for the sex segregation we observe.
2. Investigating the Potential for CAD Systems for Designing Knitwear
The primary objective of our research is the development of CAD systems to support knitwear design, that is, to support knitwear designers rather than technicians. To state the obvious, effective use of new technology involves providing the right technology for the needs of the industry, and the right industry for the technology, so that it is not wasted because of bad organisation or training, or harmful attitudes. This paper is a by-product of a study of designers and of the knitwear industry by the first author, which was intended primarily to determine the potential users' requirements for an intelligent CAD system. In order to study the design process and the attitudes of designers and technicians towards design, CAD systems, themselves and each other, the first author employed a combination of ethnographic methods.
As we are computer scientists working on ways to support design activities, our sociological observations and analysis are informal and incidental to our study of the design process, and are not situated in any developed theoretical framework. In particular, we use the term attitude in what we take to be its conventional everyday meaning. We are aware that discussing attitudes in this way is risky and unscholarly, in that it is difficult to say anything with confidence about attitudes, and we were not able to work with the rigour expected in both computer science and the social sciences. Nevertheless we find that the social context of CAD system use in the knitwear industry is too important for our technological work for us to ignore it.

I know it's terribly British to talk about the weather, but those of you who actually live in Britain will know why it's such a hot - or rather, wet - topic at the moment. Rainy enough for ya? Yup, me too. Now, those of us living on this rain-soaked little island won't actually need gadgets to tell us when it's going to rain, because it doesn't actually stop raining. For the rest of you, there is Ambient's weather-forcasting umbrella - an umbrella with an LED handle which will change colour to warn you when it's about to rain or snow. (Assuming, of course, that the drops of rain or snow haven't warned you first).
It costs $125, recieves local weather updates from Accuweather.com and has a patented "Gust-Buster" canopy design, which I'm assuming will protect you from those freak gusts of winds that threaten to send you, Mary-Poppins-style into the sky.

SEATTLE - A person familiar with Microsoft's bid for Yahoo said Friday the software company is evaluating its offer in light of the economic climate and the Internet pioneer's deteriorating business.

The person, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said Yahoo Inc.'s share of the search market and overall condition have deteriorated since Microsoft announced its bid Feb. 1.
At the time, Microsoft offered $44.6 billion, or 62 percent above Yahoo's market value. The deal is currently valued at about $41 billion, based on Friday's closing share prices.
Yahoo's board formally rejected Microsoft Corp.'s bid, saying it undervalues the company. The Silicon Valley company has since explored alliances with Google Inc., News Corp.'s MySpace.com and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, but no alternative to Microsoft's offer has surfaced.
Yahoo spokeswoman Diana Wong declined to comment about assertions that the Web portal company's business is declining.
Yahoo and Microsoft both lost less than 1 percent of their share of U.S. Web searches in February, the most recent month for which data are available, according to the research group comScore. During that month, Yahoo grabbed 21.6 percent of searches, more than Microsoft's 9.6 percent. Google Inc.'s share rose less than 1 point to 59.2 percent.
In the intervening weeks, Yahoo released internal projects drawn up in December that call for the company's revenue to rise more than 70 percent during the next three years.
The Web company also postponed its annual shareholder meeting, and thus the deadline for Microsoft to nominate its own slate of directors to fill Yahoo's board. A new date has not been set.
On Friday, the person familiar with Microsoft's thinking said the company has been patient — but will be so only to a point.
"It's up to Yahoo's board to engage in meaningful negotiations with Microsoft, " the person said.
Senior executives of the two companies reportedly met this week near Yahoo's Sunnyvale, Calif. headquarters but walked away without advancing the negotiations, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Spokespeople for Microsoft and Yahoo declined to comment when asked about the meeting.
Shares of Yahoo fell more than 3 percent in after-hours trading to $27.40. Microsoft's stock edged up 1.5 percent to $29.60.
