Born 21 November 1965 in Reykjavík, Iceland, Björk is a prolific singer, songwriter, producer, musician and reluctant actress who has been involved in music since the age of eleven. After becoming famous in Iceland for her renditions of songs by such artists as Tina Charles and The Beatles she joined a string of Icelandic rock bands: Tappi Tíkarrass, KUKL and The Sugarcubes, the last of which gained a popular following outside Iceland. Her solo work since 1993 spans the genres of rock, dance, electronic , jazz, ambient, trip-hop and classical. She is known for her avantgarde persona, her musical experimentation and sophistication, and her collaborations with many musicians, including 808 State, Tricky, Plaid, Matmos, and Mark Bell. Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant-pop Icelandic sextet the The Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk immersed herself in dance and club culture, working with many of the biggest names in the genre, including Nellee Hooper, Underworld, and Tricky. Debut, her first solo effort (except for an Icelandic-only smash released when she was just 11 years old), not only established her new artistic direction, but it became an international hit, making her one of the '90s most unlikely stars. >>(read more)Sat, 27 Sep 2008 01:02:07 -0600
'Guns N Roses' is an American hard rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. The band has sold an estimated 90 million albums worldwide, including 39 million in the United States. Their 1987 major label debut, Appetite for Destruction, sold over 26 million copies worldwide and reached #1 in the United States. The bands musical style, onstage presence and bad boy rock image helped usher in a new era of the dominant hard rock and heavy metal scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. While glam metal was the leading genre in record sales, video charts and radio airplay, Guns N' Roses offered a grittier, more traditional take on rock music, and won many fans who admired their apparent authenticity. The band enjoyed worldwide success from 1988 to 1993, but clashing personalities of different band members led to the end of the core lineup. Today, frontman Axl Rose is the only original member left in the current Guns N' Roses line-up, having served as lead singer for twenty-two years since 1985. Iron Maiden is a NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal) band. Formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, they are one of the most successful and influential bands in the heavy metal genre, selling over 80 million albums worldwide. Iron Maiden has so far released fourteen studio albums, four "best of" compilations, eight live albums and four limited boxed-sets. Iron Maiden's work has inspired other sub-genres of heavy metal, including power metal and speed metal, and is generally thought of as an influence to any "metal" music containing dual-guitar harmonization. One example of their far reaching influence is that many bands from virtually every rock and metal sub-genre list Iron Maiden as one of their influences. Many of the band's songs are based on history, folklore, movies and books, such as "Aces High", "Brave New World", "The Trooper", "The Clansman", "The Wicker Man", "The Prisoner", "Where Eagles Dare", "Out of the Silent Planet", "To Tame a Land" (based on Frank Herbert's Dune) and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" – in which words from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem are incorporated into the song. The Doors, one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the 1960s, were formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by UCLA film students Ray Manzarek, keyboards, and Jim Morrison, vocals; with drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger. The group never added a bass player, and their sound was dominated by Manzarek's electric organ work and Morrison's deep, sonorous voice, with which he sang and intoned his highly poetic lyrics. The group signed to Elektra Records in 1966 and released its first album, The Doors, featuring the hit "Light My Fire, " in 1967. Like "Light My Fire, " the debut album was a massive hit, and endures as one of the most exciting, groundbreaking recordings of the psychedelic era. Blending blues, classical, Eastern music, and pop into sinister but beguiling melodies, the band sounded like no other. With his rich, chilling vocals and somber poetic visions, Morrison explored the depths of the darkest and most thrilling aspects of the psychedelic experience. Their first effort was so stellar, in fact, that the Doors were hard-pressed to match it, and although their next few albums contained a wealth of first-rate material, the group also began running up against the limitations of their recklessly disturbing visions. By their third album, they had exhausted their initial reservoir of compositions, and some of the tracks they hurriedly devised to meet public demand were clearly inferior to, and imitative of, their best early work. Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 - October 21, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. His primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, bass, harmonica and drums. Smith had a distinctive vocal style characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery", and use of multi-tracking to create vocal harmonies. Although Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and died in Los Angeles, California, he resided for a significant portion of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. After playing in the rock band Heatmiser for several years, Smith began his solo career in 1994 with releases on the independent record labels Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars. He eventually signed a major label contract with DreamWorks Records in 1997, for which he recorded two albums. Smith rose to mainstream prominence when his song "Miss Misery", written for the film Good Will Hunting, was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category in 1997. Smith battled with depression, alcoholism and drug addiction for years, and these topics would often appear in his lyrics. At age 34, he died from two stab wounds to the chest."In spite of much grisly speculation about the tragedy, what had happened seemed clear enough: Smith may have been clean of drugs, but his depression was not so easily abandoned. He had done what he'd threatened for so long, and committed suicide." From John Mulvey's review of "From a Basement on the Hill" in NME. Smith, Elliott : From A Basement On The Hill Retrieved 15 April 2007. The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether the wounds were self-inflicted. read the rest of the Wikipedia article Mon, 29 Sep 2008 07:28:58 -0600
Sigur Rós are an Icelandic slow-motion rock band (according to the band's own definition) with shoegaze elements. The name is pronounced "see-or ros". It is derived from the Icelandic name of lead vocalist Jónsi Birgisson's little sister Sigurrós, which means "victory-rose". Some of the band's contemporaries include Múm and Amiina, both of which hail from the same creative and vibrant Icelandic music scene. Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson, Georg Hólm and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson formed the group in Reykjavík in August 1994. They soon won a record deal with a local record label, Bad Taste. In 1997, they released Von (Hope) and in 1998 a remix collection named Von brigði. The name is Icelandic wordplay: Vonbrigði means "disappointment", but Von brigði means "hope alteration". (In English, the album is sometimes known by the alternative name "Recycle Bin".) International acclaim came with 1999's Ágætis Byrjun ("An alright start") for which the band were joined by Kjartan Sveinsson. The album's reputation slowly spread by word of mouth over the next two years. Soon many critics worldwide hailed it as one of the best albums of its time and the band was playing with Radiohead and other big names. After the release of Ágætis Byrjun, the band became perhaps most well known for Birgisson's signature style of playing guitar with the bow from a cello, accentuated with reverb, creating a sweeping, fluid sound that is unique for an electric guitar. David Bowie (born David Robert Hayward Jones on January 8, 1947) is an iconic cross-era English rock musician. Bowie is commonly known as the chameleon of rock, due to his ability to predict (and even set) musical trends, adjusting his musical persona accordingly. A multi-instrumentalist, he is famous for playing the guitar, piano and saxophone; but also plays the harmonica, drums, cello, marimba, bass guitar, koto, stylophone and spoons. He rose to fame with the heady 1969 folk rock single "Space Oddity, but is perhaps best known for the flamboyant, androgynous glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972). Subsequent albums have explored blue-eyed soul, electronica and new wave, often predating these genres' popularity or even the point at which they were defined as genres. Bowie is one of the most influential rock musicians from the 1970s to the present. He has sold an estimated 136 million albums in his career and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Due to his wide spread into different genres, it could be said that he influences every band to date at least on an indirect level. In addition to his musical career, Bowie has had success as a painter, webdesigner, sculptor and actor, starring in many films (including Labyrinth, Basquiat, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Hunger, and The Prestige) across the years.>>(read more)Mon, 29 Sep 2008 07:38:20 -0600
The Clash was a seminal and extremely influential British punk rock group that existed from 1976 to 1986. One of the most successful and iconic bands from the first wave of punk in the 1970s, they incorporated rock and roll, reggae, rockabilly, and eventually many other music styles into their repertoire. They were legendary for their uncommonly intense stage performances. From their earliest days as a band, The Clash stood apart from their peers with their musicianship, as well as their lyrics; the passionate, left-wing political idealism in the lyrics by frontman Joe Strummer and guitarist Mick Jones contrasted with the nihilism of the Sex Pistols and the simplicity of the Ramones. Their 1979 album London Calling is considered by critics as one of the greatest albums in the history of rock music; Rolling Stone declared it the best album of the 1980s, even though it was released near the end of 1979 (technically, Jan 1980, in the United States). The Clash's attitude and style, as much as their music, has influenced countless bands, both within and outside the sphere of punk rock. Often lauded as "the only band that matters, " The Clash were canonized as rock saints even before they broke up. This was officially confirmed in 2003, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (read more)Sat, 27 Sep 2008 01:05:30 -0600

Conor Oberst, has been recording since the age of 13. In addition to Oberst, Bright Eyes now includes multi-instrumentalist/producer Mike Mogis, horn player and keyboardist Nate Walcott and a rotating lineup of collaborators drawn primarily from the indie music scene in Omaha, where Oberst grew up. Tool is a progressive rock band from Los Angeles, California. Tool is most noted for combining hard rock with progressive structures, strange time signatures and lyrics that range from anger to philosophical and social matters. They formed around 1990. Emerging with a heavy metal sound on their first release, when the genre was dominated by thrash metal, they were later seen at the top of the alternative metal movement with the release of their second full-length studio album Ænima in 1996. After an ongoing evolution of their sound and continuous efforts to unify musical experimentation, visual arts, and a message of personal evolution on Lateralus (2001), their most recent album 10, 000 Days (2006), as well as respective tours, they are generally described as a style-transgressing act and part of progressive and art rock. Their aspirational work features exceptionally long or complex releases, controversial lyrics and cover art, and unorthodox music videos, which results in a rather ambivalent relationship between the band and today's music industry, at times marked by censorship, and the band's ongoing struggle for privacy. Regina Spektor was born on February 18, 1980, in Moscow, Russia, to a musical family. Her father, a photographer, was also an amateur violinist, and her mother was a music professor in a Russian conservatory; she now teaches at a public elementary school in Mount Vernon, New York. Spektor studied classical piano from the age of six, practicing on a Petrof piano given to her mother by her grandfather. She was also exposed to the music of rock and roll bands such as The Beatles, Queen, and The Moody Blues by her father, who obtained such recordings in Eastern Europe and traded cassettes with friends in the Soviet Union. The family left the Soviet Union in 1989, when Regina was nine, during the period of Perestroika when Jewish citizens were permitted to emigrate. The seriousness of her piano studies led her parents to consider not leaving Russia, but they finally decided to emigrate, for religious and political reasons. Travelling first to Austria and then Italy, the family settled in the Bronx, New York, where Spektor graduated from a middle school yeshiva. She then attended the Frisch Yeshiva High School in Paramus, New Jersey on a scholarship for two years, but, feeling out of place, eventually transferred to a secular public school, Fair Lawn High School, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, where she finished the last two years of her high school career (read more)Sat, 27 Sep 2008 01:07:25 -0600
The Prodigy, a band from Essex (England), is the brainchild of Liam Howlett who is writing and producing the material in its entirety.
Maxim originally began as an MC for the band before doing vocals on 'Poison', a track on their second album Music For the Jilted Generation and then several others on Fat of the Land. He remains a member as an MC at the live shows.
Keith Flint began as a dancer for the band before moving on to become a vocalist initially on the track Firestarter but then for several others on the third album Fat of the Land. Flint was probably the most visually recognisable member of the band and considered by many to be the frontman though he has very little input to writing the songs. He still sings with the live show but had no input on the last album. He also wrote the single 'Baby's Got a Temper'. (read more)Mon, 29 Sep 2008 07:34:33 -0600
30 Seconds to Mars is a rock band hailing from Los Angeles, CA. Created in 1998, 30 Seconds to Mars currently consists of the following members: Jared Leto (Vocals, Guitar), Shannon Leto (Drums), Tomo Milicevic (Lead Guitar), Tim Kelleher (Bass). Solon Bixler left the band before the production of A Beautiful Lie, but is subsequently credited for his work touring with the band after the release of their debut self titled album 30 Seconds to Mars. Their sound is somewhat unique, on occasion described as 'space rock' - with a very deep use of synthesisers - particularly on the debut self titled album. The space rock reference comes from the theme of the first album, which seems to deal with space travel, astronauts and the universe, although these references are often known to be metaphors for personal growth, change, and renewal. The sound is often fitting. Cryptic, obscure lyrics combine heavy guitar melodies to drive a sound compared to the likes of Tool, Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode. Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA or simply Queens) are a hard rock/alternative rock band from the Palm Desert, California area in the United States. The band is frequently labelled stoner rock, although they reject the label. QOTSA developed a style of riff-oriented, heavy music which the band's founder and mastermind Josh Homme described as 'robot rock', saying that he "wanted to create a heavy sound based on a solid jam, and just pound it into your head". Since then, their sound has evolved to incorporate a variety of different styles and influences. While in high school, Josh got together with locals Brant Bjork, Chris Cockrell, (later Nick Oliveri), and John Garcia resulting in the formation of Kyuss (firstly known as "Sons of Kyuss" - name Kyuss comes from a creature from Dungeons and Dragons Role Playing Game). QOTSA formed in 1997, rising from the ashes of Kyuss and began playing together during the now legendary Desert Sessions. Homme has drawn all of the members from that diverse group of musicians for QOTSA. The band originally formed under the name Gamma Ray, but almost faced a lawsuit from the European metal band of the same name. QOTSA have gone through many line-up changes since first breaking into the hard rock scene. Their most recent line-up includes: Josh Homme (Guitar/Vocals), Troy Van Leeuwen (Guitar/Lap Steel/Keyboards/Backing Vocals), Joey Castillo (Drums), Michael Shuman (Bass/Backing Vocals) and Dean Fertita (Keyboards/Guitar/Backing Vocals). Notable previous members include Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Dwarves, Mondo Generator), Matt Cameron (read more)
