The Strokes is a 5 piece band hailing from New York City, made up of Nikolai Fraiture (bass), Julian Casablancas (vocals), Albert Hammond Jr and Nick Valensi (guitar) and Fab Moretti (drums). Their The Modern Age EP kick-started a wave of hype that saw their 2001 debut record, Is This It achieve massive success and helped initiate an explosion of bands who squeezed brazen New York punk attitude into 3 minute pop songs. In 2003, their second album (Room on Fire) hit stores and recieved critical praise, some critics citing this album as an advance musically and showed they weren't content to milk the formula that brought them their success. Constant touring followed by a well-earned break (during which Casablancas married the band's publicist's secretary) meant that it wasn't until January 2006 that their third record, First Impressions of Earth was released. A singer-songwriter originally from Mechanicsville, Virginia, USA, Jason Mraz set out for the big city, attending a performing arts college in New York City. Realizing the competitive nature of the musical theater world he paired his innate desire to perform his own material, Mraz picked the guitar at age 18 and began panhandling on the streets of NYC. Rumor has it that Mraz ran into a 'psychic' in central park who told him something along the lines of "remember to follow your dreams". Jason interpreted this as his sign to follow his heart all the way to the San Diego coffee house scene where a developing base of creative singer/songwriters was beginning to blossom. Mraz gained a following of fans on the coffee house circuit - most notably Java Joe's, where he worked with percussionist Toca Rivera. ( read more)Sat, 23 Aug 2008 10:44:27 -0600

Colbie Caillat is a singer-songwriter with songs based on a humble approach; although her music is acoustic based, the arrangements go much deeper, culling from classical folk, jazz & pop, with her distinguished breathy vocals and dynamic melodies commanding the audience of the listeners she’s gained and which have been described as sounding like "sweet honey flowing over rocks." A great song, says Colbie Caillat, should lift your heart, warm the soul and make you feel good. Taking her own sound advice, "Coco", the debut album by the 22 year-old Californian singer-songwriter is simply crammed full of them. In an age when marketing has been elevated above content and so many songs are written and produced to a pre-ordained formula, Caillat comes as a welcome breath of fresh air. Records these days seem to fall into two categories. The vast majority tend to contain one or two good tracks which you download to your computer so that you never have to listen to the rest of the album again. Far more rare are those that demand to be listened to from start to finish, with every song in perfect symmetry. Think of the kind of vintage, organically-crafted albums that Carole King or Joni Mitchell used to make. Thankfully, it's a tradition that is being kept alive today by the likes of Norah Jones, Jack Johnson - and now Colbie Caillat.>>(read more)

Kenny Chesney was born March 26, 1968, in Knoxville, Tenn., and raised in nearby Luttrell. He attended college at East Tennessee State in Johnson City and became a fixture in the area's venues, including Chuckie's Trading Post and Quarterback's Barbecue. "The scene up there then was mostly blues, rock and folk, " he recalls. "I was about the only one doing George Jones and Hank Jr. I got to where I had a pretty good following."
An awakening of sorts came when he went into the Classic Recording Studio in Bristol, Va. Backed by several musicians he knew from college (who later became the core of Alison Krauss' band), he recorded an album's worth of songs he'd written. (read more)Sat, 23 Aug 2008 05:48:32 -0600
Pioneers of dance music in the 1980s, New Order hailed from Salford and Macclesfield, England, and are noted as being one of the first bands to bridge the gap between post punk and dancefloor. They were Factory Records' highest selling artist; they funded Factory's famous Manchester club, The Hacienda. They recorded with legendary hip-hop producer Arthur Baker (on 1983's single Confusion and 1984's Thieves Like Us), and they embraced Ibizan club culture on the album, Technique. Formed in 1980 by the three surviving members ( Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris) of Joy Division after the lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. Gillian Gilbert joined in October 1980 on keyboards and occasional guitar. Their early music followed in the same vein as Joy Division, most notably on debut album Movement. This is mostly seen now as a 'transitional' album where the new 4-piece band were trying to find a new identity. They continued to develop their music and their identity with tracks such as Procession and Temptation until 1983 when they released Blue Monday, arguably their most famous song and the biggest-selling 12" single of all time. This came in such a detailed Peter Saville-designed sleeve (replicating a floppy disc) that it is claimed by some that the band's record company, Factory, lost money on every copy sold. The release of "Blue Monday" coincided with the album Power, Corruption & Lies which further developed their rock/electro crossover. Other albums followed in 1985 (Low-Life), 1986 (Brotherhood (read all) Sat, 23 Aug 2008 06:22:42 -0600
The Mars Volta are an American musical group founded by Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez. They are generally considered progressive rock, with jazz and Latin influences. Beck Hansen (born Bek David Campbell, July 8, 1970) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Beck's music--with its pop-junk culture collage of musical styles, obtuse, ironic lyrics, and post-modern arrangements incorporating samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and heady sound effects--was among the most idiosyncratic of '90s alternative rock. Though his most popular albums were released in the 1990s, Beck continues to inspire fans well into the modern age of alternative rock, with his creative songwriting combined with his innovative production style and never ending willingness to experiment and surprise. Beck was born in Los Angeles, California, to David Campbell (a musician and son of a presbyterian minister) and Bibbe Hansen (a former dancer for The Velvet Underground, member of Black Fag, and visual artist). When his parents separated, Beck stayed with his mother and brother in Los Angeles, where he was influenced by that city's diverse musical offerings—everything from hip-hop to latin music—and his mother's art scene – all of which would later reappear in his recorded and published work. He didn't have many friends in his childhood, which gave him time to develop his musical talent. (read more)Sat, 23 Aug 2008 05:29:03 -0600
The Beach Boys are an American rock and roll band. First formed in 1961, they gained popularity for their close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a California youth culture of surfing, girls and cars. Brian Wilson's growing creative ambitions later transformed them into a more artistically innovative group that earned critical praise and influenced many later musicians. The group initially comprised singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. This core quintet, along with early member David Marks and later bandmate Bruce Johnston, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band""Still America's Band: The Beach Boys Today", Kevin M. Cherry, National Review, July 8, 2002 and have had thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band), including four number one singles. Many changes in both musical styles and personnel have occurred during their career, notably because of Brian Wilson's mental illness and drug abuse (leading to his eventual withdrawal from the group) and the deaths of Dennis and Carl Wilson in 1983 and 1998, respectively. Extensive legal battles between members of the group have also played their part. After Carl Wilson's death, founding member Al Jardine was ousted by Mike Love. Love and Bruce Johnston then leased the rights to the band's name and continue to tour as The Beach Boys. read the rest of the Wikipedia articleSat, 23 Aug 2008 05:59:23 -0600
