October 2008
Welcome to issue 37 of DNN Creative Magazine
This issue marks the start of Volume 4, that’s three full years of bringing you quality DotNetNuke Tutorials, and just to show our thanks we have made this an extra special giant sized issue! We have almost 2 hours of videos, an interview with Jeff Smith of Venexus talking about SEO, and more news from the DNN Creative news podcasts.
The issue begins with four detailed tutorials on the FCK Editor. The focus on these tutorials is the advanced areas of the FCK Editor. These tutorials will help you to ensure your content administrators add content using good practices, it will help to speed up the time taken to add content as well as secure the FCK Editor functions so that certain users have access to certain features in the FCK Editor, ie. for a forum.
The first FCK Editor tutorial covers formatting style definitions, which allow you to create your own custom pre-defined styles to quickly apply classes from your skin. Following this we demonstrate how to create custom FCK Editor HTML templates, these can speed up administration time, as well as help to minimise mistakes by content administrators and ensure content is added using good practices.
FCK Editor custom toolbars and security roles are then explained, which will allow you to customize which toolbar buttons are available for use in the FCK Editor, as well as which security roles have access to the toolbar sets. The final tutorial for the FCK Editor covers further configuration options and demonstrates the key areas for adjusting the advanced settings within the FCK Editor.
Keeping within the theme of ensuring content administrators use good practices when adding content to a DotNetNuke portal, we also introduce the concept of alert styles. Alert styles inform the administrator of any bad practices they have used by highlighting the bad practice text with a red box. This can really help to minimise bad practices and keep control of the content added to your DotNetNuke portals.
To complete the issue we also have 3 podcasts, the first is an interview with Jeff Smith from Venexus where we discuss SEO with DotNetNuke, and the following 2 podcasts are DotNetNuke News and Tips.

Welcome to issue 36 of DNN Creative Magazine
This issue explores the FCK Editor. The FCK Editor is used in various DotNetNuke modules such as the Text / HTML module and the Forum. The FCK Editor allows you to add text, images and any HTML code you require and has an interface similar to Microsoft Word.
We begin this issue with a demonstration of each FCK Editor Toolbar button function, covering simple text editing techniques through to advanced configuration options for links.
We then demonstrate how to change the skin of the FCK Editor, how to upload it to your DotNetNuke portal and how to apply the new skin to the FCK Editor.
Following on from this we show you how to configure the content area within the FCK Editor so that it displays the same text styling as your skin. We demonstrate how to solve problems that occur when dark colours are used for a skin background, such as text being unreadable in the editor. Finally we show you how to configure the settings in the FCK Editor within a single instance, modules of the same type and across a portal in your DotNetNuke installation.
To round this issue off, we have two podcasts. The first is an interview with Chris Chodnicki and Kevin Schreiner of R2i where we discuss the release of their new product Open Web Studio (OWS). Then, to close the issue we have a discussion between Lee Sykes and Richard Wootton of DNN Creative about what is happening in the world of DotNetNuke this month. This will be a regular segment of the magazine where we aim to keep you updated on all the latest news in DotNetNuke.

Welcome to issue 35 of DNN Creative Magazine
In this issue we demonstrate how to create a print stylesheet for use with your DotNetNuke skins. DotNetNuke has a built-in token which allows you to print the content of a module. This is very limited in its use as it only prints the content of one module at a time. So, we demonstrate how to create a print stylesheet, how to format the layout of the print stylesheet and how to remove unwanted content from the print version of your skin. This is an essential technique for improving the usability of your DotNetNuke websites.
Also in this issue, we have produced the DNN Creative CSS Reference Book.
This is a special 112 page PDF resource to help you learn CSS for use with your DotNetNuke skins.
The CSS Reference Book explains all the currently supported properties and how to use them in an easy to understand guide. This resource is useful for both beginners and advanced users.
This issue comes complete with 7 video tutorials and a 112 page CSS Reference book!

Finally, we demonstrate how to select which content to make available for printing and how to remove content not required for printing, this is an essential technique for removing elements such as the menu and login links which are not required for a printed page.

Welcome to issue 34 of DNN Creative Magazine
In this issue we have converted 5 open source html templates into DotNetNuke skins.
These templates have been chosen due to their different design and CSS techniques used. Each of these template designs used a different approach while converting them to a DotNetNuke skin, so you will be able to view the code and learn from this variety of implementations.
Skins:
Lazy Days
Fluid design, re-size the browser window and view how the balloons and buildings move. View the text styling, especially the implementation of blockquotes. The DotNetNuke control panel in this skin had to be moved to the bottom of the page so it would not interfere with the design.
Zenlike
Fluid design centred with a background image. This skin presented an interesting challenge when converting to DotNetNuke, especially so that the background image would not interfere when administrating in DNN. The control panel in this skin is placed underneath the main header.
Bitter Sweet
Stylish fixed width skin. The main challenge for this skin was the layout of the panes in DotNetNuke, if a pane did not contain any content, the layout collapsed. This was fixed by changing and improving the original CSS of the XHTML template so that it is suitable for a CMS. Notice how the title backgrounds extend outside the text in the content pane.
Greenery
Interesting fixed width design with an image cutting the skin in half. This presented interesting challenges when implementing the right pane in DotNetNuke and preventing the pane dropping below the main content in IE6.
Dark Ritual
Fixed width 3 pane skin. Dark background skins always present a challenge in DotNetNuke when working in the administration area. A 1 pane skin was created with a white background in the content area for administration tasks, along with special styling for the FCK editor so that content can be viewed when adding images and links using the FCK editor.
