Want to cut down on all those calories but don’t know how? Well, working out might be the answer, for researchers have found that aerobic exercises increase a blood protein that may suppress appetite.
Researchers at the University of Chile Clinical Hospital in Santiago conducted a study in which they found that aerobic exercise decreases body fat and calorie intake in overweight and obese people.
They believe that this happens because exercise brings about changes to a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, whose main role is promoting the growth and survival of nerve cells.
The boffins conducted the research over a three-month period during which they evaluated blood levels of BDNF in 15 overweight or obese men and women.
At the end of the study, it was noted that the participants had not only shed some of their weight, had decreased waist circumference, and blood pressure, but that they also consumed fewer calories than at the beginning of the study.
With exercise, it was found that BDNF levels greatly increased, which in turn led to less calorie intake and greater the weight loss, said lead author A. Veronica Araya, MD, assistant professor.
Based on the findings she said that it was thus "important to clarify the factors involved in the response to different weight loss therapies because we could find a marker to predict response to the intervention" as it might help healthcare providers select who will benefit from exercise.
Moderate exercise during pregnancy does not contribute to low birth weight, premature birth or miscarriage, according to a new study, which claims that physical activities during the period may actually reduce the risk of complications.
A Michigan State University professor and team have contributed to the U.S. government's first-ever guidelines on physical activity.
Kinesiology professor James Pivarnik and doctoral students Lanay Mudd and Erin Kuffel wrote the section on pregnancy and postpartum activity as part of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines unveiled Oct. 7 in Washington, D.C., by the Department of Health and Human Services.
"There has been quite a dramatic change in regards to pregnancy and exercise, " said Pivarnik.
"While it used to be thought that avoiding exercise meant avoiding harm to the fetus, research now shows physical activity can not only improve health of the mother but also provide potential long-term benefits for the child, ” the expert added.
Specifically, the guidelines call for women to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week during pregnancy and the postpartum period, preferably spread throughout the week. In addition to health benefits, moderate physical activity also may reduce the length of labor, evidence suggests.
The guidelines call for women to avoid doing activities that involve lying on their back after the first trimester and activities with high risk of falling or abdominal trauma.
During the postpartum period, regular physical activity continues to benefit a woman's overall health, according to Pivarnik's research, by increasing her cardiorespiratory fitness and improving her mood.
Physical activity after pregnancy also helps women achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and when combined with appropriate caloric restriction, promotes weight loss.
"In the time I have been performing research on exercise during pregnancy, we have shifted from cautious conservatism to the current guidelines, which encourage women to be active throughout gestation, " Pivarnik said.
Also as part of the new guidelines, the government recommends 150 minutes of activity for adults per week.
Drinking coffee after a workout can help refuel muscles and recover quickly from rigorous exercising.
Glycogen, the muscle's primary fuel source during exercise, is replenished more rapidly when athletes ingest both carbohydrate and caffeine after rigorous exercise, thus improving their performance.
The researchers found that athletes who ingested caffeine with carbohydrate had 66pct more glycogen in their muscles four hours after finishing intense, glycogen-depleting exercise, compared to when they consumed carbohydrate alone.
"If you have 66% more fuel for the next day's training or competition, there is absolutely no question you will go farther or faster, " said Dr. Hawley, the study's senior author.
Despite coffee, caffeine is also present in common foods and beverages, including, tea, chocolate and cola drinks.
The study involved seven well-trained endurance cyclists, wherein they were asked to ride a cycle ergometer until exhaustion, and then consume a low-carbohydrate dinner before going home.
The study was conducted in four sessions. This exercise reduced the athletes' muscle glycogen stores prior to the experimental trial.
The athletes did not eat again until the next day for the second session, when they again cycled until exhaustion. The participants were given a drink that contained carbohydrate alone or carbohydrate plus caffeine and rested in the laboratory for four hours. Both the processes were repeated 7-10 days later.
The researchers found that one hour after exercise, muscle glycogen levels had been refilled to the same extent whether or not the athlete had the drink containing carbohydrate and caffeine or carbohydrate only.
However, four hours after exercise, the drink containing caffeine resulted in 66 pct higher glycogen levels compared to the carbohydrate-only drink and caffeinated drink resulted in higher levels of blood glucose and plasma insulin.
Several signalling proteins believed to play a role in glucose transport into the muscle also elevated to a greater extent after the athletes ingested the carbohydrate-plus-caffeine drink, compared to the carbohydrate-only drink.
But the researchers warned that athletes who want to incorporate caffeine into their workouts should experiment during training sessions well in advance of an important competition to find out what works for them.

Dr. Shobha Sehgal, cosmetologist and beauty expert with VLCC Healthcare Pvt Ltd., tells you how to care for your hair this summer.Your favourite celeb’s pin-straight hairstyle might be looking fabulous on you, but if a group of researchers are to be believed, the flat irons – used for straightening hair – can damage hair and cause hair breakage.
At the American Academy of Dermatology’s Summer Academy Meeting 2008 in Chicago, dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani, assistant clinical professor of dermatology, University of California, San Francisco, presented evidence that when ceramic flat irons are used improperly or too frequently, hair breakage can occur.
“The newer flat irons that have a ceramic coating instead of a metal one are marketed as providing more rapid and uniform heat transmission. While this allows for quicker straightening of the hair with less damage, it is really a classic case of buyer beware, ” said Dr Mirmirani.
“We’re seeing that when these ceramic flat irons are used at the highest heat settings and on a daily basis to achieve straight hair, they can really take a toll on the structure of the hair and cause very noticeable problems that can be hard to repair, ” Dr Mirmirani added.
Temporary hair straightening using a flat iron is achieved by applying heated tongs to the length of the hair. This heat breaks and then reforms the hydrogen bonds in the inner core of the hair fiber.
Dr Mirmirani noted that while the goal of straightening is to alter the inner substance of the hair, the unwanted consequence may be damage to the outer protective cuticle, causing weathering, damage and eventual hair breakage.
Hair weathering or damage is usually characterized by dry ends or flyaway hair. However, if breakage occurs, it can happen anywhere along the length of the hair and cause a shaggy or skimpy appearance to the hair.
When this occurs, flat iron users may use the device even more frequently to try to tame the broken or uneven appearance of their hair – which can lead to more damage.
Led by Professor Charlie Xue of RMIT University and colleagues, this first of its kind study surveyed 2526 people in Victoria on their use of the 24 most common medicinal herbs in Australia.
Results indicated that in the last one year, 22.6 per cent of participants had used at least one of the herbs. The highest use was reported among 35 to 54 year-olds who were university-trained and those whose annual earnings were between 60, 000 to 80, 000 Australian dollars.
Aloe vera, garlic and green tea turned out to be the most popular herbs, each used by about 10 per cent of participants. There were more popular herbs including echinancea, ginger, peppermint, ginseng, gingko biloba, evening primrose, dandelion and St John's wort.
[ad#blackbanner]
Over 90 per cent of study participants were found to believe their herbal medicine had been helpful in enhancing their general health and well-being, or providing relief from specific medical conditions.
"From a clinical perspective that is quite important, " ABC Online quoted Xue, as saying. In his opinion, people went for herbal help to treat chronic conditions and the most common among them are skin problems, sleep disorder, anxiety, stomach, cold, flu and fever.
Those who took herbal medicine were not found to be aware of the scientific evidence on its effectiveness and safety. On the other hand, they tended to rely more on recommendations from others, including the internet, friends and family.

Motherhood and pregnancy might make individuals go a little gooey, but it doesn’t turn women's brains into mush, says a new study.
According to mental health researchers at The Australian National University, despite fears mothers may have that pregnancy affects their cognitive functions, there is no evidence to suggest that is true.
The findings have been released as part of Mental Health Week, which runs until tomorrow (Saturday).
The research team, lead by CMHR Director Professor Helen Christensen, analysed information from the PATH through Life Project database and found that neither pregnancy nor motherhood had a detrimental effect on cognitive capacity.
The PATH Through Life Project began in 1999 by recruiting and interviewing 2500 young people aged between 20 and 24. The group were subsequently followed up in both 2003 and 2007.
After eight years of the study, 223 of the women had become mothers and 76 had been pregnant at the time of the research interview.
"Our research suggests that although women – and their partners – think there may be a link between brain capacity and pregnancy and motherhood, there are certainly no permanent ones that we can find, " said Professor Christensen.
"We found no effects of pregnancy on cognitive capacity and motherhood also had no detrimental effects. One thing we did observe was that women who have children become marginally less well educated than women who don''t have children in their 20s.
“While this is hardly surprising, as having children will interrupt education, it is something to watch in the future as early mothers may be disadvantaged later on if they do not continue with further training, " she added.
Professor Christensen said the study was only able to look at the effects of motherhood over a relatively short time, and she hoped that future human data will align with findings about mother rats.
"Rodent data shows that mother rats have improved multi-skilling capacity and less fear responses than non-mothers. The rat data suggests that mother rats navigate mazes more efficiently, have less anxiety and fear and excel at multi-skilling. That sounds to me like almost every mother I know and I hope that the human effects eventually mirror those findings, " she said

A ‘healthy’ fat found in olive oil, nuts and avocados sends an important message to the brain: stop eating, you're full. According to a new research, the fatty foods wards off huger pangs.
The study by UC Irvine pharmacologists shows that these fats trigger production of a compound in the small intestine that curbs hunger pangs.
The discovery, the researchers say, points toward new approaches to treating obesity and other eating disorders.
Daniele Piomelli, the Louise Turner Arnold Chair in Neurosciences, and his colleagues have studied how a fat-derived compound called oleoylethanolamide regulates hunger and body weight.
The study has been published in the journal Cell Metabolism. The analysis revealed that an unsaturated fatty acid called oleic acid stimulates production of OEA, which in turn decreases appetite. Oleic acid is transformed into OEA by cells in the upper region of the small intestine. OEA then finds its way to nerve endings that carry the hunger-curbing message to the brain.
There, it activates a brain circuit that increases feelings of fullness. In previous studies, Piomelli found that increasing OEA levels can reduce appetite, produce weight loss and lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Piomelli believes OEA could be used in a variety of drugs because it is a key to the way the body naturally handles fatty foods and regulates eating and body weight. "We are excited to find that OEA activates cell receptors that already have been the focus of successful drug development, " he said.
"This gives us hope for a new class of anti-obesity drugs based on the savvy use of natural appetite-controlling mechanisms, ” the expert added.

There are over 250 species of Aloes in the world, mostly found in Africa and Asia especially India, China and Pakistan, but not very abundantly. They range in size from little one-inch miniatures to massive plant colonies consisting of hundreds of 2-foot diameter plants.
Although most Aloes have some medicinal or commercial value, the most commonly known is the Aloe barbadensis... This genre is commonly known as Aloe Vera.
As the world advances in the field of medicine, newer research revealed more and more secrets. Research on already existing elixirs and known herbal medicines took the field on to a new horizon.
As to the claims of the medicinal properties of the Aloe plant, I can only quote from the personal experience and research carried out by those who posses the requisite know how.
In case of burns, an immediate application of fresh gel has relieved much of the pain, and prevented blistering, many times. It was also found to be quite effective to relieve itching from stings, bites and various 'stinging' plants, such as poison ivy. It is also good for the same problems, when they are encountered by domestic pets and farm animals.
Expert advise is that, when needed to be used medicinally, just remove a lower leaf from the plant, slice it open, and apply the gel onto the affected area. This has worked as a local anesthetic as well as being anti bacterial.
Dried latex from the inner lining of aloe leaves has been used traditionally as a laxative taken by mouth. Although few studies have been conducted to assess this effect of aloe in humans, the laxative properties of aloe components such as Aloe Vera are well supported by scientific evidence.
A revolutionary discovery reported in the 1930s of topical aloe's beneficial effects on skin after radiation exposure lead to widespread use in skin products. Currently, aloe gel is sometimes recommended for skin irritation caused by prolonged exposure to radiation, although scientific evidence suggests a lack of benefit in this area. But still it is widely claimed to be used in the preparation of UV sun block lotions, which are commonly available in the market,
You are no longer required to grow the plant at home to get the benefits out of it. Aloe Vera is now available in stores near you in the forms of supplements. This is the guarantee to a healthier life for you and for your loved ones.

Up till now, many people are yet to agree with the fact that too much of certain foods can cause serious ill health or trigger the development of certain diseases including cancer. For example, cardiologists like Dr. Adewole Adebiyi recently added his voice to the fact that there should be moderation in red meat intake because too much of red meat can cause health problems. He however advised people to consider fish consumption.
Not only that, other nutrition experts and dieticians like Professors Atinmo, Akinyele and Keshiro as well as dietician Tunde Ajobo have at different fora counselled people to give more attention to the consumption of fruits and vegetable and lay less emphasis on refined foods.
Even a professor of environmental health in the Faculty of public health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, M. K. C. Sridahr have warned people to reduce their consumption of roasted foods, adding that these foods contain Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) which could predisposes the body to cancer, including stomach and colon cancer.
As if it were not enough, recent warnings from scientists say the rate at which cancers are affecting people is becoming alarming. They blamed individuals for contributing to the development of different kinds of cancer. Scientists even said that the dietary life style of people especially in developing nations of the world is the major contributory factor. However, numerous studies indicate that diet can be a very effective tool in the fight against cancer and blood pressure.
For instance, one of the most convincing associations between diet and blood pressure was found in the Dietary Approaches to Stop hypertension (DASH) study. This trial examined the effect on blood pressure of a diet that was rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products. This restricted the amount of saturated and total fat. The researchers also found that there is a compelling evidence that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables like water melon, ginger, garlic and onion as well as regular consumption of soya bean products and chill pepper could be involved in the protective measures against prostate tumour, breast cancer as well as protect against heart disease.
For instance, Spinach which is common in the market, but which many people often overlook is known as the “gold standard” of green leafy vegetables, and it is packed with lutein and vitamin E which help women having fertility problems. Not only that, both lutein and vitamin E are powerful anti-oxidants and spinach also help ward off cancer of the liver, ovary, colon and prostate.
For women who wants to block breast and protect themselves against lung cancer, they should realise the fact that regular eating of pineapple will achieve this. Scientists say pineapple is a good source of the anti-oxident vitamin C. In addition, Dr. Nurudeen Animasaun butressed this assertion, explaining that pineapple unknown to many people also contain the enzyme called bromelain which can protect against breast cancer.
And for those who takes delight in eating water melon, scientists as well as Dr. Animakun encourages them to continue to take water melon because it provides vitamins, minerals and enzymes important for the functioning of the heart and good health. It also contain cancer – fighting abilities. In fact, water melon belongs to the group of vegetables often referred to as an essential member in a heart- healthy diet”, he further stated.
It is also of interest to know that certain fruits and vegetable have the power or ability to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. For example, the largest and longest study to date, done as part of the Havard-based Nurses’ Health Study and Health professionals follow-up Study which included almost 110, 000 men and women whose health and dietary habits were followed for 14 years revealed a significant and remarkable result in the benefit of regular eating of certain fruits and vegetables in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and stroke over medication.
Although all fruits and vegetables are likely to contribute to this benefit, certain green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach and mustard greens, possesses this attribute the most. Also, cruciferous vegetable vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage as well as citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and grape-fruits make important and distinguished contribution in preventing cardiovascular disease.
“The higher the average daily intake of these fruits and vegetables, the lower the chances of developing cardiovascular desease. Those who averaged 8 or more serving a day were 30 per cent less likely to have had a heart attack or stroke”, the report stated.
